House Rust/ Johannesburg
This family home is situated in Waterfall Lifestyle Estate in Midrand. The brief called for a sustainable design which along with the newly promulgated energy efficient regulations meant that the design approach focused on a greener lifestyle. The house structure is simplistic and emphasis is placed on detailing of the various materials that layer the facades. Steel structures supporting storm water harvesting tanks are celebrated and placed on the street façade. Steel sun screens cantilever over the larger windows to ensure all the heat gain is well regulated. The roof structures are articulated by interlinking concrete roofs and the main roof forms a feature of the design. The main roof is further articulated by a large skylight that ensures that the corridor spaces within the house are also naturally light. The house lives out onto a decked courtyard that overlooks a wetland, with the outdoor living spaces forming an extension of the entertainment areas on ground level.
