House Haarhoff / Irene

Centurion

Project Description

The client, a single mother with two children, called for a very modern, light filled house with large glazed areas, which can connect to the lush garden of a sub-divided property in Irene, Pretoria.

The architects designed a simple steel frame, based on a standard steel construction farm shed, which can be erected at a reasonable cost. Glass and brick infill complete this very simple shell. The height of the interior space allowed for an upstairs loft bedroom. The kitchen and open plan dining area are tucked under the loft.

Phase two consists of two bedrooms located behind the main house and linked with a transparent passage, defining an intimate courtyard together with the main house.
