Project Description

The second phase accommodates new administration facilities, additional lecture halls, a new library, an up-market cafeteria and an exhibition space. All interior functions are organized by a triple volume pedestrian “street”, which sensibly connects the interior of the building to the main courtyard and the parking lot on the northern side. As a result of the incorporation of clerestory lighting on a high level, this “street” allows for the distribution of natural light to the central areas of the building. Smaller light wells and deep recessed windows soften the harsh sunlight of the Highveld.

This building was a collaboration between Henri Comrie and Chris Wilkinson as co-directors of Comrie + Wilkinson Architects and Urban Designers.
